‘Sea Sketches’ CBC SMCD 5227, Music for string orchestra played by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Roy Goodman.
‘Sea Sketches’ by Grace Williams, ‘Divertimento’ by Gareth Walters, ‘Two Pieces’ and ‘Sonata for Strings’ by Sir William Walton, and ‘Serenade’ by Peter Warlock.
Grace Williams’ inspiration for ‘Sea Sketches’ was, of course, the many moods of the sea as she saw them every day from her home on the Glamorgan coast. Gareth Walters based his ‘Divertimento’ on rhythmic and melodic elements present in Welsh folk-song. Both pieces, which may now be regarded as ‘core’ Welsh repertoire, have been available on disc before, in the excellent recording made in 1970 by the English Chamber Orchestra under David Atherton (Welsh Music for Strings, Decca SXL 6468, nla). This recording caught the attention of the young Roy Goodman, who conducted both works in the 1970’s with the Reading Youth Orchestra, and he has clearly retained a considerable affection for them. They now make a welcome return to the catalogue in this newly released recording by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Goodman is a little quicker in both pieces than Atherton, but his approach is basically very similar. Both works receive idiomatic and committed performances. Peter Warlock composed 'Serenade’ at his home in mid-Wales during the years 1921 and 1922. Goodman’s interpretation is lilting and warm-hearted, tending to emphasise this music’s affinities to Elizabethan dance, graceful and a little amorous. Walton’s ‘Sonata for Strings’, a transcription of his String Quartet in A minor, receives a robust and stylish performance. There is fine playing by the MCO throughout, and excellent notes are provided by Don Anderson. The CD cover features a striking painting by Canadian artist Franklin Carmichael.
